Create a department
Departments represent the business units in an organisation. They sit above teams in the org hierarchy and are primarily used for reporting, ticket categorisation, and user grouping. Assigning users and teams to departments enables filtered views in dashboards and helps route tickets to the right functional area. Departments are a reference structure; they do not carry permissions. Create departments before creating teams so teams can be associated correctly from the start.
Who can do this: Tenant administrator
Before you start
- Use an account with access to the stated page and permission for the chosen action.
Safeguards
- Deleting a department does not remove or reassign teams and users linked to it — update those associations first.
- Department names should match official org chart terms. Inconsistent naming causes confusion in reports and ticket routing.
- Go to Configuration → Tenant Management → Organization.
- Navigate to the Departments section.
- Click "Add Department".
- Enter the department name and optional description.
- Save the department.
- After saving, assign relevant teams and users to this department.
Expected outcome: The user has reviewed the result of create a department in the application.
